Dead Joshua Tree

These unusual desert trees look unusual in life and even stranger when dead. I saw this tree's haunting outline from far in the distance and wandered over to see what it was. Unlike most trees, the trunk of a Joshua tree is made of thousands of small fibers. It also lacks annual growth rings, making it difficult to determine its age.
