Crossfield Garage, Exterior #1

This garage sits abandoned just off highway 2 near the town of Crossfield, Alberta. I love what moving clouds can do for these photos. Getting an effect like this is mostly luck and being in the right place at the right time.

Photographed in 1999, this series of images has appeared on my site since its debut along with a plea for information regarding this building. It wasn't until four years later that I began to learn the history of this location. In February of 2003, Jo Tennant, Mayor of the Town of Crossfield was kind enough to research the building and write to me with some information.

I was always somewhat puzzled by this place because the construction style the building seemed to pre-date the age of the four lane highway which runs past it. Apparently the garage was moved to the highway from the Town of Crossfield. It was originally a Purity station but when it moved to it's present location in about 1957/58, it became a Royalite station. The last person who ran the service station was Keith Roach, when it closed in the mid 1970's. Special thanks also go out to Crossfield area resident Denis Walroth who provided Mayor Jo with much of this information.

I'm always on the lookout for more information about my locations. If you know anything else about the history of this building, please drop me an email with the details.
