BCATP Air Base Near Vulcan, Distant View

This is the site of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan base near Vulcan in Southern Alberta. Part of Canada's effort to contribute to allied air superiority during World War II, this base was part of a massive undertaking which included 94 schools at 231 sites across Canada. Shown here are only three of many hangers (I wish I had counted them), which now sit abandoned on the Southern Alberta prairie. I arrived here to shoot at 2:30 AM, and the visual impact of coming upon such a massive facility abandoned out in the middle of nowhere at night was like driving into an episode of X-Files.

Be sure to visit The Alberta Aviation Museum or The Nanton Lancaster Society and Air Museum to learn more about the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan and see pictures of BCATP bases when they were new.
